Opening Sentence
¶ At the beginning both of Morning prayer, and likewise of Evening Prayer, the Minister shall reade with a lowd voice, some one of these Sentences of the Scriptures that follow. And then he shall say that, which is written after the said Sentences.
At what time soever a sinner doth repent him of his sinne from the bottome of his heart; I will put all his wickednesse out of my remembrance saith the Lord. Ezek. 18.
I do know mine own wickednesse, and my sinne is alway against me. Psal. 51.
Turne thy face away from our sinnes, O Lord and blot out all our offences. Psal. 51.
A sorrowfull spirit is a sacrifice to God: despise not, O Lord, humble and contrite haerts. Psal. 51.
Rent your hearts, and not your garments, and turne to the Lord your God, because he is gentle and mercifull, hee is patient and of much mercie, and such a one that is sorry for your afflictions. Joel 2.
To thee, O lord God belongeth mercies and forgevenesse, for we have gone away from thee, and have not hearkened to thy voice, whereby we might walke in thy Lawes, which thou hast appointed for us. Daniel 9.
Correct us, O Lord, and yet in thy judgement, not in thy fury, least we should be consumed and brought to nothing. Jere. 10.
Amend your lives, for the kingdome of God is at hand. Matth. 3.
I will goe to my Father, and say to him, Father, I have sinned against heaven, and against thee: I am no more worthy to be called thy sonne. Luke 15.
Enter not in to judgement wyth thy servants, O Lord: for no flesh is righteous in thy sight. Psal. 143.
If we say that wee have no sinne, wee deceive ourselves, and there is no trueth in us. 1 John 1.
